From one tennis spectacle to the next
This year's Monterrey Opel was held between March 31 and April 6, 2014. Last year's champions Anastassija Pawljutschenkowa of Russia (singles) and Timea Babos and Kimiko Date Krumm (doubles) arrived in Monterrey to defend their respective titles.
NUSSLI was tasked with installing a new arena for the tennis tournament and developed an NT grandstand with an audience capacity of 2.400 seats and a VIP area for an additional 1.500 spectators. NUSSLI was furthermore in charge of the provision of light towers and camera platforms for the event.
After the disassembly of the tennis arena used for the Davis Cup in San Diego, 180 tons of material were transported directly to Mexico for reconstruction. Border crossings with such huge amounts of material were difficult, and required a lot of time. Upon arrival in Monterrey, the installation crew was faced with additional challenges, including an uneven terrain and a number of trees in their path. Vehicle access to the site was virtually impossible, leaving the crew with no choice but to carry the material to the construction site by hand.
