autosymphonic 2011, Mannheim

It was a veritable firework of superlatives: The world premiere of “autosymphonic” on September 10 in Mannheim astounded and delighted the around 17,000 visitors with a breathtaking kaleidoscope of lights, images and sound. The multimedia-based event told the story of the development of the automobile and provided a glimpse into its future.

Many people only began to comprehend the enormous dimensions of the “autosymphonic” open air event after the construction work had begun. By the time the event was supposed to officially begin, the entire Friedrichsplatz square had been transformed into a concert arena with an area of 65,000 square meters. This sizable project required a lot of temporary infrastructures. NUSSLI’s part of the project encompassed the construction of 2,200 square meters of raised platforms for the production and for the audience, various sound towers of up to 12 meters high, FOH and stair towers. NUSSLI also constructed the main stage as a specialist CD construction, which was designed to hold around 370 square meters of G-Lec (video screen). The actual stage had a size of 18 x 16 meters with an internal height of 7.5 meters.

The total weight of all the material installed by NUSSLI for this event came to around 430 tons, and was delivered by 22 articulated trucks. The 21 installers and 2 construction supervisors only had 7 workdays to finish the entire construction. The construction of the stage posed an additional challenge, as the structure was built over one of the main traffic arteries of the city, and could therefore only be constructed in stages. The removal of the entire structure, however, took only two days.
