BEN HUR LIVE in Rome 2011

Since its world premiere in London in September 2009, more than 140,000 people have been to watch BEN HUR LIVE. Between September and December 2011, BEN HUR LIVE gave guest performances in the Nuova Fiera di Roma, immersing the audience in a 2000-year-old story. The highlight of the performance was the legendary chariot race with five quadriga teams.

For the performance, NUSSLI constructed an arena with three grandstands. Like in the arenas of antiquity, all 2,350 spectators were able to watch the display at close quarters. 200 seats were available for VIPs, and a further 20 for the mobility impaired. The entire grandstand area was draped with 5000 m² of black fabric. Between the back-stage area and the playing area, NUSSLI’s 30-man strong team also constructed a 70 m high wall, which was 14 m deep in places and 11 m high, and into which the sound and lighting equipment was integrated.

The materials were delivered and construction work completed in August. During this month, many Italian businesses are closed for the summer, and motorway travel is restricted for lorries. NUSSLI was nonetheless able to bring the requisite materials to Rome within the given deadlines and complete the work in just eight days.
