Davis Cup Semi-finals, Córdoba 2011
Córdoba’s bullring, better known as El Coso de los Califas, was the chosen venue for the 100th Davis Cup semi-final, which took place between Spain and France on 16th, 17th and 18th September 2011.
The Davis Cup is the world’s most important international tennis competition where, unlike the majority of world tennis events, it is not the individual players who compete but national teams composed of various players chosen by their national sports association. Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano López formed the Spanish Mapfre team. After several clashes between Spain and France, the former qualified for their eighth Davis Cup final, to be played against Argentina, after beating France 4-1 overall.
NUSSLI was commissioned by the RFET (Royal Spanish Tennis Federation) as the main contractor for the organisation of this important event. The project involved the construction of 400 seats in VIP boxes, various hospitality installations (catering areas, shops, etc.) for a total of 2,300 people, additional grandstands, media areas (commentary booths, halls for press conferences and interviews, etc.), technical plans (evacuation procedures, licences, etc.), temporary sanitation installations and players’ rest areas. In just ten days, an assembly team of 40 people carried out the construction using 340 tons of materials, which had to be delivered in 17 lorries. Some of the challenges facing the NUSSLI team were transporting the materials within the bullring, the short time period available for the assembly to be completed and the challenging geometry of the bullring when ensuring a good view for spectators.
