FIFA World Cup 2010, Stadium extension Cape Town
On the occasion of the FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa, NUSSLI received an order by the host city of Cape Town to expand the existing capacity of Green Point Stadium from 52,000 seats with an additional 13,000, to make a total of 65,000 seats. The modular grandstands had to thereby comply with the high safety standards of the FIFA without sacrificing comfort. For this expansion, and for the first time, NUSSLI implemented the upgraded model of the NT System with 800 mm row depth, which had been especially developed for the project in Cape Town. The removable expansion was able to be easily installed into the progression of existing seating rows.
Following the event, these seats were removed again. The newly available zone can now be used as required, for example as a hospitality area or be planned for the installation of Sky Boxes. The logistic organization required a high degree of precision and reliability: about 450 tons of material were loaded on to ships and trucks in different locations around the world and sent on their way to Cape Town – where they arrived on schedule.
