FIFA World Cup 2022; Bid Qatar
The Emirate of Qatar has submitted a bid to host the FIFA Football World Cup in 2022 and has been successful. The „Qatar 2022 Bid Committee“ commissioned NUSSLI with the development of concepts for the modular extension of existing stadiums and for a stadium that is constructed entirely of modular systems. In addition, NUSSLI is also responsible for conducting a study on the sustainable continued use of the extended grandstands following the FIFA World Cup in 2022. The stadium concept for the bid made by Qatar comprises two existing stadiums, four newly built stadiums exclusively for use as football stadiums, and the construction of two new track and field stadiums. With modular systems, these facilities will double the capacities and consequently accommodate visitor seating as required by FIFA. The highlight will be a stadium construction having 45,000 seats, which can be completely disassembled and will be positioned prominently on an artificial island at the harbor of the capital city of Doha.
The Bid Committee has placed the focus of the candidacy entirely on sustainability: with innovative approaches in regard to the topic of climate, one objective is to promote the generation of renewable energies in the Persian Gulf. On the other hand, the promotion of sports should be strengthened throughout the entire region. NUSSLI developed a concept that included the meaningful use of the implemented modular systems in Qatar at smaller venues in the region in the time after the World Cup. From the around 250,000 additional seats created for the FIFA World Cup, 99.5% can be used in smaller stadiums to accommodate 15,000, 10,000 and 5,000 spectators. With the support of NUSSLI's year-long experience in the event sector, Qatar seeks to promote the sustainability of major events with pathbreaking concepts.
