IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Zurich/Bern 2009
From April 10 to May 11, 2009, the 73rd IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship was held in the two venues in Bern and Zurich-Kloten. This made it already the 10th time that Switzerland hosted this major athletic event. More than 100 players and around 300,000 visitors came from 16 countries to follow the exciting games up close.
The two arenas were made fit for the 56 games of the World Championship. This included, among other things, the conversion of the standing room vacancies and the construction of all temporary infrastructures and event zones. NUSSLI was not only commissioned with the complete conversion measures, in their function as planner the event constructor had already delivered the concept. This included, for instance, diverse tent structures for fans, kitchen area and storage with an area measuring up to 1,625 square meters. In Bern, NUSSLI also built an entrance gate with a span of twelve meters, along with extensive security facilities, commentator boxes, media seats, camera platforms, and crowd barriers. The planning and implementation of all temporary structures for the World Championship – which only took ten days to build – was under the direction of NUSSLI.
Russia and Canada competed in the finals. For the second time in a row the Russians were victorious and were able to take the trophy home with them after beating the Canadians 2:1.
