January 2010

Volkswagen at the NAIAS 2010, Detroit

In January, the Detroit Motor Show heralds the traditional start of the new automotive year. This has been the case since 1907, when the first premieres of the automotive year are celebrated at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The key US automobile fair particularly serves to present the products of the US manufacturers General Motors, Ford and Chrysler to their domestic audience. But even the European and more specifically the German suppliers like Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen always have a strong presence at the NAIAS. Toting numerous premieres along with them, the Asians too are present in the metropolis of the American automobile industry. The 146 exhibitors presented a total of 37 premieres and 18 concept cars to the approximately 715,000 visitors at the NAIAS 2010.

NUSSLI was commissioned by Volkswagen AG with the stand construction. The automobile manufacturer presented themselves with a state-of-the-art two-story stand made of steel, wood, and glass, along with aluminum and stainless steel elements. The area of the exhibition stand spanned 1,700 square meters. About 1,200 glass plates were installed as flooring across the entire stand area. In addition to the stand construction, NUSSLI was also responsible for the electricity, air conditioning, lighting, acoustics, and media, including all permits from local authorities.  During the six-week assembly time, NUSSLI had about 25 assemblers on call –
in this time, night shifts were also worked for a period of two weeks. The planning of the exhibit stand called for two weeks, the production only four weeks.

A special highlight, and designed especially for the press conference, was the diagonally standing, flush-mounted garage door. It opened automatically and was six meters wide. Another special attraction was the nighttime reconstruction for the "Industry Preview" (January 13-14). In the night from the 12th to the 13th of January, two VW Beetles were lifted up to the first floor and placed in the coffee garden.
